Docs & Film Festivals

The website for documentary & film festival enthusiasts. Subscribe to our posts about which docs to watch and film festivals to visit.

Doc Alliance is one of the most interesting European documentary VoD websites. is partnership of five European documentary film festivals, CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, Denmark, DOK Leipzig in Germany, Jihlava IDFF in Czech Republic, Planet Doc Festival in Warsaw, Poland and Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland. The website offers more than 600 documentaries and experimental films that can be streamed, downloaded, or bought on DVD. Some of the films can be watched for free, for others streaming costs few Euros. As stated on their website, “the films are selected on the basis of strict dramaturgic criteria, with an emphasis on their social and aesthetic value and signature style.”

Each partner festival awards one film Doc Alliance awards (see The Good Life in yesterdays post) and these five films are then presented at all five partner festivals. 20 new film titles are uploaded every month to the website, chosen by the partner festivals. One of the best things about the website is that directors, producers, distributors and students can register and submit their films on the website. If the film gets chosen for upload, the doors of distributions opens up to a large audience, located all over Europe.

Inbetween the latest docs one can find “golden oldies” like Night Mail, directed by Harry Watt and Basil Wright in 1936. The use of sound and editing, narrative and visual style is quite remarkable concidering this was in the 1930s. It´s no wonder Night Mail is one of the most known films produced by the British Documentary Movement.

Enjoy the trailer – and check out the film itself on You won´t be dissappointed.
