American photographer Julius Shulman (1910-2009) is one of world´s greatest architectural photographers. He spent a vast time of his career photographing modern architecture in America especially in Los Angeles, California where he lived. Shulman’s photographs are simply put, beautiful. His black and white photographs of the Hollywood homes in the 40’s, 50´s and 60s give insight in long gone reality. A reality that seems somehow a lot more glamorous and refined than modern-day Hollywood.
Shulman himself was a lovable character who knew many of leading architects in America and his works helped the modernism to flourish. One Shulman´s most iconic photographs is of Case Study House No. 22 aka The Stahl house by architect Pierre Koenig, located in the Hollywood Hills overlooking L.A. According to LA Times, Shulman took this photograph one May evening in 1960.
Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman is directed by Eric Bricker (2008). Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, this documentary for all of you interested in photography and architecture. The film is available on DVD on the films website, as well as Amazon. The picture above is a still frame from the film of Case Study House N.22 (although not the original photo by Shulman).
