Soul Catcher

Have you ever had lost your soul because someone took a photograph of you? Many aboriginal tribes believe that if someone takes a photograph of a person, the person looses his/ her soul. This is the topic of the Finnish experimental documentary Soul Catcher, directed by P.V. Lehtinen. Without any narration or dialogue, the topic is explored using a mixture of static shots of people staring into the camera, time lapses and micro shots of ants in the sand among various other shots. The cinematography of Hannu-Pekka Vitikainen and Matti Helariutta is the forte of the film and it fits very well with the music by Biosphere, Tapani Rinne & Tuomas Norvio.

This experimental documentary has had a good festival success, screening at 13 film festivals so far, thereof Nordisk Panorama 2011, Tampere International Film Festival 2011, DOK Leipzig 2011, Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival 2011 and IDFA 2011. Coming film festival screenings include Minimalen Short Film Festival in Trondheim, Norway 14-18th of March, IndieLisboa International Independent Film Festival, Lisboa, Portugal 26th of April-6th of May and Planete Doc Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland 11-20th of May.

You can see the trailer for the film on the director´s website. The photos with this post are from IDFA´s website.
