If the autumn months are the ‘Christmas’ for documentary film festivals, then March would be the ‘Thanksgiving’. Numerous well-known documentary film festival take place all around the world in March and the film selection is good. Here are some good festivals worth attending.
Tempo Documentary Film Festival, 5ht-10th of March in Stockholm, Sweden – Tempo is the biggest documentary film festival in Sweden and this year´s theme is ‘Speak your mind’. With workshops, seminars, film talks and last but not least lots of interesting films, Tempo Documentary Film Festival should be in everyone’s plans in Stockholm these days. Don´t miss the screening of Palme and extended talk with directors Maud Nycander and Kristina Lindström on Sunday the 10th at 12:00. The program can be found here.
Tampere Film Festival, 6th- 1oth of March in Tampere, Finland – Tampere Film Festival is one of the major film festival in the Nordic countries. This year a special focus will be put on documentary films from Philippines, China and Vietnam. There will also be a special focus on animations and much, much more. Finnish Blood Swedish Heart (dir. Mika Ronkainen, 2013) is one of the films in the National Competition.
SXSW – 8th-16th of March in Austin, Texas – SXSW is one of the major indie film festivals in the USA. Great selection of films and the best part, SXSW music festival runs from the 12-17th. We Always Lie to Strangers (dir. AJ Schnack and David Wilson) is screening in the Documentary Feature Competition at SXSW.
Eurodok, 13th-17th of March in Oslo, Norway – Eurodok is small documentary film festival in Oslo but very popular none the less. Screenings of Norwegian films are free and there are awards for the best documentary as well as the audience awards. The program can be found here. Mission to Lars (dir. James Moore and William Spicer) is one of the documentaries screening at the festival.
Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival, 15th-24th March in Thessaloniki, Greece – This years festival marks the 15th year of the festival. Unfortunately the program is not ready yet, but it will probably be ready very soon.
Green Mountain Film Festival, 22nd – 31st of March in Montpelier, Vermont, USA – Green Mountain Film Festival is a feature film festival and documentary film festival. This year 26 documentaries will be screened at the festival, and many of those are some of last years biggest documentaries like Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature 5 Broken Cameras (dir. Guy Davidi and Emad Burnat). Another interesting documentary at the festival is without a doubt The Secret Disco Revolution (dir. Jamie Kastner).
